Excerpt The author of the article discusses one of the most complex pages of the Romanian medallic art, the medals issues during the monarchic period - 1866-1947. The rapid economic, social and cultural modernization of the Romanian society, as well as the major political achievements of this time - the Independence in 1878, the establishment of the Kingdom in 1881, the participation to the Second Balkan War in 1913, the participation to the Great War, the achievement of the National Unity in 1918, the participation to the II WW are reflected by hundreds of official and private medals.
Started quite late, in the first decades of the 19th century, the Romanian art of the medal lived a real golden age during the reign of Charles I. In spite of the important political and economic achievements of the Romanian society during the period 1916-1947, the number of medals are smaller than 1914. However, their historical value, as well as their artistic quality is more elevated.
The author emphasizes the political and propagandistic meaning of some of the medals struck during 1866-1947 bearing the portraits of the members of the Romanian
Royal House. Some considerations are also made on the artistic value of the Romanian art of the medal during the period 1866-1947.
